Lung Pleurisy – an inflammation of the pleura, which usually begins to develop as a complication of a disease: heart attack, gangrene, abscess, pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc. A common cause of inflammation is hypothermia. Less frequently pleural effusion occurs in damage and injury of the chest, rheumatism, diseases of the abdominal cavity.
Symptoms of Pleurisy
At pleurisy occurs swelling and thickening of the pleura, it becomes rough and uneven. If exudate (inflammatory fluid) begins to stand out in the pleural cavity, occurs pleural effusion. Effusion affects the organism, compressing the lungs and surrounding organs, the number of exudative fluids can reach the limits of 1-5 liters. In the presence in exudate of the white blood cells in large quantities, develops a purulent pleurisy.
Advantageously, the beginning of acute pleurisy accompanied by pain when inhaling in the chest, weakness, fever. Also, pain when breathing often associated with dry pleurisy, when the liquid does not have time to accumulate in the pleural cavity. Further pleural sheets are separated from each other by fluid in process accumulation of fluid and pain disappears.
Shortness of breath occurs due to compression of the lung and fluid buildup, as a consequence, the lung located on the affected side, is not able to participate in breathing. The patient with pleurisy in most cases prefer to lie on the diseased side, since this provision contributes to better unfolding of healthy lung, that allows easier to breathe. There is a reflex cough, often with severe pain. When pleural effusion duration of fever depends on the duration and severity of the disease, the dry pleurisy – usually a few weeks.
Treatment of Pleurisy
Dry pleurisy in patient can fully recover within a few days. When exudative pleurisy in favorable conditions, recovery occurs in 2-3 weeks, but in some cases, able to take up to several months. The duration of the disease depends on the fluid when it is resorbed very slowly, or not at all is resorbed.
Patients with exudative pleurisy recommended to treat in a hospital setting, under constant supervision of a doctor and qualified care. This is of particular importance at the long-term course and the acute period of disease. When treating patients with purulent pleurisy may require surgical intervention.
Prevention of Pleurisy
Prevention of pleurisy is considered to be the prevention of development and timely treatment of the diseases that it causes. Treatment of pleurisy in acute period consists in the need compliance with bed rest, in the presence of dyspnea to give the patient position – half-sitting. In the event of sharp pain – painkillers and sedatives prescribed by a doctor-pulmonologist. It should also pay great attention to the treatment of other major diseases that could cause pleurisy.
